Career Episode 1 In my first career episode I describe my last projects with Uhde ThyssenKrupp. I have been working with Uhde since November 18, 2006 until March 12, 2008. There are two distinct periods: one in Saudi Arabia where Ive worked as Process Engineer - Commissioning Supervisor for Safco 4 Project (period of November 18, 2006 - June 15, 2007) and the second period as Process Engineer - Consultant in Head Quarter office, Dortmund - Germany (period of August 7, 2007 - March 12, 2008). In this respect during the plant running I was conducting a series of tests and experiments, changing the MDEA solution composition, flow and temperatures and collecting data for future simulation. Then after, I used process simulation softwares like Aspen and Pro II in order to find a solution for increasing the efficiency of the CO2 removal system. I prepared a complete report with all my conclusions sustained by collected data, trends, simulations and observations, and then I sent it to the design department in Dortmund and to BASF licensor of the CO2 removal system. After a series of meetings between the Client - SAFCO - Sabic, Uhde, and BASF a decision regarding future modification was made. During the final Turn Around shut-down, my task was supervising of the final works and modifications inside the CO2 removal system. I inspected the main absorber, flash drums, and stripper, checked signs of corrosion, preferential flow circulation, internal packing rings layer distribution. I supervised and controlled the final works regarding the installation of a new gas distributor inside the absorber in order to improve CO2 absorption. The new design for the gas distributor was a result of my conclusions regarding the efficiency of the absorber column. These business plans change if, in application to real life, it fails to provide for the ideal concept embodied in it. Christmas ghost story Essay Traumatic experiences, except to the child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe. Dr. Crowe tries to uncover the whole truth about Coles Supernatural abilities. With Dr. Crowes Cole begins to understand what he must do to get the ghosts to disappear. He then communicates with the ghosts to help them deal with their unfinished business. Dr. Crowes marriage begins to fall apart because of the excessive over time and work he has been doing with young Cole. His wife wont speak to him and he thinks that she may be having an affair. Finally Dr. Crowes confronts her one night but she acts like hes not even there. She is crying about why Dr. Crowes had to leave her. Then she drops his wedding ring. Dr. Crowes sees the ring that he thought was on his finger, and then comes to the sudden realisation that the guy that shot him in the beginning of the movie actually killed him and he is just another ghost that young Cole can talk to. He realises everybody he has talked to have been ghosts. It has the main character that you would expect of a ghost story. It includes Cole a young child that is the victim of these attack, Malcolm a doctor (who is the ghost), the Childs mother, and the doctors wife, evil ghosts, and other less important characters. The main setting is in the houses of the child and the doctor but also in the childs imagination. A lot of the attacks happen when the young boy is alone/during the night as this makes it more suspicious. The opening is conventional as it has a death before the actual main story begins. During the opening we get a flash back on the story so that we know what has already happened at what is to come. Although nothing becomes clear until the very end. It has a typical plot outline as it is based upon a series of hauntings to main victim. It also has typical weather in some places. Dull, cold and stormy. The ending could also be seen as a typical one as it is closed and the mystery as to why Cole is being haunted is sorted out. This is a very good example of a modern day ghost story as it has the haunted aspect but also the violence of the new age story lines. A Christmas carol can be seen as a ghost story for a few reasons. It is in the first stave that we meet Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserable but wealthy old man. Scrooge works in his counting house with his clerk, Bob Cratchit. It is Christmas Eve, and Scrooge receives a few visitors. One is his nephew, Fred, who invites Scrooge to dinner with him on Christmas. Then come two portly gentlemen who are collecting for charity. We learn here that Scrooge had a partner, Jacob Marley, who died on Christmas Eve seven years ago. Scrooge refuses to give the gentlemen anything, saying he helps the poor already through supporting the workhouses. Scrooge allows Bob to have Christmas Day as a holiday, but insists that he be back at work all the earlier next day. When Scrooge returns to his home he is visited by the Ghost of Jacob Marley who is weighed down by a massive chain, made up of cashboxes, keys and padlocks. Jacob Marley says to Scrooge any man who wishs to not socialise in life will not be with people when he dies. Marley tells Scrooge that he, too, will wear chains unless he changes his ways. He then warns him of three more spirits, which will visit to help him, change his ways. In the next stave we are introduced to the ghost of Scrooges Christmas past. We see him as a boy at school on two occasions. First, he sits alone in a cold schoolroom then later we see him with his older sister, Fan, who has come to bring him home for the holidays. At seven oclock on Christmas Eve, Mr. Fezziwig tells Scrooge and his other workers there is to be a party. Everyone is welcome at Mr. Fezziwigs ball, and the young Scrooge enjoys it a lot. The Ghost tells Scrooge that Mr. Fezziwig has done nothing special, only spent a little money he can easily afford. Scrooge replies that it is impossible to get words from peoples looks. This makes scrooge slowly change his mind towards Christmas. In stave three we are introduced to the second of the three ghosts, this spirit is the Ghost of Christmas Present. It is a great giant, dressed in a green robe and surrounded by piles of food. This spirit shows Scrooge how his clerks family, by strangers from all over and by his nephew, Fred, celebrates Christmas. The spirit carries a torch and everywhere it goes this torch sprinkles incense or water on people and makes them become kinder to each other. Scrooge has never seen Bob Cratchits house. Here he sees how the Cratchits, despite being very poor, can be happy at Christmas. Bob and Mrs. Cratchit struggle because their family is large: there are six children. (Martha, Belinda, Peter, two unnamed Cratchits, and Tiny Tim.) Scrooge sees how frail Tiny Tim is, and asks the Spirit if he will live. The ghost tells him that unless something changes in the future, the child will die. When Scrooge protests he is reminded of his words earlier If he be like to die he had better do it and decrease the surplus population. Now Scrooge sees, under its robe, two horribly dirty and ugly children. The ghost tells him This boy is Ignorance this girl is Want. Scrooge is told to beware of them both. When he asks if nothing can be done to help them the ghost again quotes his earlier words: Are there no prisons? Are there no work-houses? Scrooges attitude changes he starts to feel down and upset, and regrets what he has said earlier. In this stave Scrooge is again taken to places he does not know. The spirit is more like the kind of ghost we meet in conventional ghost stories. It is a hooded phantom, its face is unseen and it points at things but does not speak. We are puzzled in this stave as there are a few wealthy people hanging round a coffin but the phantom will not speak or say who it is. Later on we learn that the man is scrooge but not many people mourn for him except his nephew and the crotchets. This is when he decides he must defiantly change his ways. In the last stave scrooge changes his ways and really gets into the Christmas spirit. He celebrates it with his family and friends. He gets a young boy to go round to the butchers and get the large turkey, then deliver it to the Cratchetts and he generously pays the young lad. Scrooge helps out the Cratchetts by raising bob and helping to support their family. Tiny Tim does not die scrooge is a changed man. The setting can be seen as typical and A-typical as it is Christmas time, which is joyful and happy however it is cold, dark and damp. The opening is basically an introduction to the main character and what he does. It is not until the middle of the story we really can identify it as a Ghost story as this is when the three ghosts are introduced. The ghosts although typical to a ghost story are also a-typical as the yare not necessarily seen as haunting Scrooge but merely helping him to change. Pero,  ¿quà © esperar en estos casos y quà © obligaciones se tienen si se deposita la fianza? En este artà ­culo encontrars toda la informacià ³n necesaria sobre fianzas de inmigracià ³n y su diferencia con las penales. Asà ­Ã‚  sabrs quà © esperar y quà © hacer en el caso de que se fije una fianza y decidas salir de fiador para obtener asà ­ la libertad de tu ser querido. Si una persona extranjera es detenida, qu tipo de fianzas pueden fijarse para que quede libre mientras no se resuelve su caso? Hay dos tipos de fianza que hay que tener en consideracià ³n y que son muy distintas.  Fianzas criminales, que son reguladas por el estado y se dan en los casos en los que una persona -ciudadana o extranjera, legal o indocumentada - es detenida y se le acusa de un delito.Y las fianzas de inmigracià ³n, que son reguladas por la ley federal y son civiles. Esto es, no se ha cometido un delito. Se fijan para lograr la libertad de un indocumentado que ha sido arrestado o detenido  pero no se le acusa de ningà ºn crimen (estar ilegalmente en Estados Unidos no es un delito, es una violacià ³n de las leyes migratorias).Es fundamental  saber de quà © tipo de fianza se trata. Ya que asuntos importantes como por ejemplo la forma de pago son distintos.  ¿Quà © hay que saber sobre  las fianzas criminales?Cualquier persona que comete un delito ser detenida. Dependiendo de la gravedad se fijar o no una fianza.Como regla general, si a la persona a la que se acusa de haber cometido un delito es extranjera y el crimen tiene la calificacià ³n de agravado (aggravated felony en inglà ©s) entonces como regla general no se fijar una fianza. Asà ­ sea una persona con estatus legal, como residente permanente o tenga una visa vlida.En los dems casos en los que el delito no es agravado se fijar o no una fianza atendiendo a factores como: Que la persona detenida no presenta ningà ºn riesgo para la comunidad. Para esto se tiene en cuenta el historial delictivo, si lo tuviera.  O si se ha rehabilitado.  Si hay razones para sospechar de que hay un riesgo de que se desaparezca   y no se presente cuando sea citado por la corte. Aquà ­ se tiene en cuenta por ejemplo si tiene familia en los Estados Unidos. Qu pasa cuando se pide una fianza criminal y hay tambin un hold de Inmigracin? Cuando una persona extranjera comete un delito puede suceder que se le fije una fianza criminal (por el delito).  Pero adems puede suceder que la fianza criminal tenga unida un hold de Inmigracià ³n. Esto generalmente quiere decir que cuando se resuelva el asunto delictivo, el caso pasar al ICE.   Con lo que la persona quedarà ­a detenida.Es por eso que en estos casos en los que se da al mismo tiempo la fianza criminal y el hold de inmigracià ³n es muy importante consultar con un abogado para ver cul es el mejor camino a seguir  antes de pagar la fianza criminal. Se trata de evitar pagar la fianza criminal pero no lograr la puesta en libertad de la persona, debido a que lo retiene Inmigracià ³n. Cundo se da el caso de una fianza de inmigracin? Cuando se detiene o arresta a una persona indocumentada pero que  no se ha cometido ningà ºn delito. Un extranjero que est detenido por ser ilegal pero no ha cometido ningn delito tiene derecho a que se le fije una fianza y tras su pago quedar libre hasta que se resuelva su caso? No, no siempre es posible. Se miran las circunstancias de cada caso, particularmente si tiene alguna posibilidad de arreglar su situacià ³n. Quin puede fijar la fianza de inmigracin? Un oficial del ICE, que es la agencia del gobierno encargada de arrestar o detener a extranjeros. Si el ICE no la fija en ocasiones se puede solicitar un audiencia ante un juez de inmigracià ³n.  Tambià ©n en algunos casos ser posible ir a una audiencia (hearings)  ante un juez para intentar obtener una rebaja en monto de la fianza fijada por el ICE.    ¿Cunto se demora de media el tiempo para presentarse ante Corte de inmigracià ³n? Cuntos tipos de fianzas de inmigracin hay? Una, que se conoce con el nombre de formulario I-352 del ICE. Pero admite cuatro variedades: G(1), que es lo que se conoce como Delivery Bond. Es la ms comà ºn.G(2), que se conoce como Public Safety Bond, para garantizar que si el extranjero es puesto en libertad y causa algà ºn gasto pà ºblico, el gobierno va a recuperar ese dinero.G(3), que se conoce como Voluntary Departure Bond.G(4), que se conoce como Order of Supervision Bond, o por sus siglas en inglà ©s OSUP. Garantiza que una persona extranjera se presenta ante un oficial del ERO cada vez que se le cita. Si se paga una fianza de inmigracin tipo delivery bond, qu es lo que se est garantizando? Este es probablemente el tipo de fianza migratoria ms frecuente. Su objetivo es  que la persona extranjera que ahora est detenida quede libre al pagar la fianza y pueda vivir con su familia y consultar ms libremente con un abogado mientras se decide su caso. La persona que paga este tipo de fianza migratoria se compromete a que el detenido que queda en libertad: Se va a presentar a TODAS las audiencias (hearings) para las que tenga una cita en la Corte de Inmigracià ³n. Si no se presenta, se enviar al obligor (la persona que salià ³ de fiador en la fianza)  un documento conocido como I-340 (Notice to Appear). Eso quiere decir que debe presentar en corte en la fecha que se le indique a la persona extranjera por la que ha dado la fianza. Si no lo hace, no podr recuperar la fianza. Y el extranjero tendr en su contra una orden de deportacià ³n dictada en absentia.Que va a comunicar todos los cambios de domicilio ySobre todo se garantiza que si al final se dicta en su contra una orden de deportacià ³n que va a salir del paà ­s dentro del plazo seà ±alado. Y es que cuando un juez ordena la remocià ³n de una persona esto no quiere decir que se le lleve de la Corte al aeropuerto y se le envà ­e ya a su paà ­s. Se puede apelar la orden de deportacià ³n de un juez. Si no se hace o se pierde la apelacià ³n entonces la persona que firmà ³ la fianza como obligor recibir el formulario I-340. En à ©l se le dir el dà ­a y la hora en la que debe entregar a la persona para la que dio la fianza para que sea deportada. Si no lo hace, perder el dinero de la fianza. Qu se garantiza con una fianza de inmigracin de la variedad voluntary departure? Se le da la opcià ³n de dejar los Estados Unidos dentro de un periodo de tiempo. Si efectivamente se cumple y se abandona el paà ­s dentro de la fecha fijada podr recuperarse la fianza.  Si el ICE o un juez fijan una fianza de inmigracià ³n,  ¿quià ©n la puede pagar? Se puede depositar la fianza de dos formas: Directamente un familiar o amigo del detenido que es ciudadano o residente permanente legal.En este caso hay que pagar la fianza al completo.A travà ©s de un agente (bondsman) o compaà ±Ãƒ ­a autorizados a negociar fianzas de inmigracià ³n.   Cunto cuesta contratar una fianza de inmigracin con un agente? Si se acude a un agente para el depà ³sito de la fianza de inmigracià ³n se est haciendo un contrato de la modalidad que se conoce como surety bond. Es un contrato que funciona de la siguiente manera. El agente (bondsman) garantiza a la Corte que el detenido, si dejado en libertad con fianza, se va a presentar a la corte y en su caso saldr del paà ­s si es ordenada la deportacià ³n. Por su parte,  el familiar o amigo del detenido  garantiza  al bondsman que el detenido asà ­ har.Sà ³lo se puede hacer este tipo de contratos con un agente o una compaà ±Ãƒ ­a que es a su vez agente de una aseguradora que tiene crà ©dito con el gobierno de Estados Unidos y que est autorizada a dar fianzas migratorias.   El costo de las de tipo migratorio puede ser muy diferente de agente a agente. Pero generalmente est entre el 15  y el 20  por ciento el premium inicial (el pago que se hace al principio).Una vez que se paga  el premium, eso no se  recupera. Es el costo del servicio. Por ejemplo, si la fianza es de $5,000 y el premium es de un 20  por ciento, pagas de costo inicial $1,000. Pero puede haber ms costos.  Por eso antes de contratar es importantà ­simo pedir precio a ms de un agente y  de preguntar, entre otras, lo siguiente:  ¿Hay que pagar por aplicar? ¿Existe costo de renovacià ³n anual y si lo hay, cunto es? ¿Existe un mà ­nimo de aà ±os que se est obligado a renovar  aunque el caso se acabe antes? ¿Cà ³mo se fija el costo que hay que pagar? ¿Es un porcentaje del total del monto de la fianza o es una cantidad fija? ¿Hay que  pagar una tarifa por implementacià ³n? Qu pasa si la persona que quiere ser fiador para que dejen en libertad a su ser querido no tienedinero para pagar el premium? Dependiendo de las  circunstancias y del bondsman, en algunos casos es posible financiar. Si se contrata con un bondsman para el pago de una fianza de inmigracin, se tienealguna responsabilidad econmica si la persona detenida al quedar en libertad no cumple con la Corte o con la orden de deportacin si llega a dictarse? Sà ­, si el detenido queda en libertad y a lo largo del proceso no cumple (por ejemplo, se ordena su deportacià ³n y no se va de Estados Unidos) entonces hay  que pagar por la totalidad de la fianza. En el ejemplo anterior la fianza se fijaba en  $5,000, y al contratar con el bondsman se pagaron  en concepto de premium inicial $1,000.   En caso de incumplimiento de la persona garantizada el fiador tendr que pagar  al bondsman los $4,000 restantes. Pero, cmo se garantiza el bondsman que se levaa pagar? Pues porque en el momento de firmar el contrato con el bondsman para que à ©ste procediera al depà ³sito del pago de la fianza se determinà ³ el  colateral. Qu es el colateral? Para pagar una fianza de inmigracià ³n a travà ©s de  un bondsman no sà ³lo se abona el premium inicial sino que hay que dejar  un colateral. Es una garantà ­a que sirve  asegurary  que el bondsman no pierde dinero en el caso de que  la persona para la que se da la fianza no cumple con su obligacià ³n de presentarse a las audiencias en corte o cumplir en su caso con una orden de deportacià ³n. En este caso  el bondsman no podrà ­a  recuperar la fianza, entonces va a cobrar ejecutando sus derechos sobre el colateral. Cunto puede ser el colateral? Pueden pedir que se garantice con el colateral la totalidad del dinero pedido como fianza, de hecho, eso es muy frecuente. O tambià ©n pueden solicitar una cantidad menor, como el 50 por ciento.Sin embargo, particularmente en esos casos de colateral no completo debe examinarse bien el contrato e incluso compararlo con lo que ofrecen otras agencias de fianzas. Hay que leer todo, incluso la letra pequeà ±a.Porque lo que a primera vista puede parecer una buena oferta, puede resultar a la larga que es caro. Por ejemplo, porque se pone como condicià ³n una prima de renovacià ³n anual muy alta o por un nà ºmero de aà ±os mà ­nimo que puede superar a los del caso. Qu puede darse como colateral? Es decir, que el caso se ha cerrado definitivamente y ha acabado de alguna de las siguientes maneras: Permitià ©ndose al inmigrante permanecer en Estados UnidosHa salido del paà ­s deportadoHa salido del paà ­s voluntariamente, en los casos en los que es posibleHa fallecidoLleva 30 dà ­as o ms detenido por un asunto local, estatal o federal. Una vez que se produce la notificacià ³n se har el papeleo para cancelar  el colateral. Cunto tiempo tarda la persona detenida en ser puesta en libertaduna vez que se paga la fianza? Depende del lugar donde està © detenida. Puede ir desde una hora a  a seis u ocho. Si sefirmaun contrato de fianza de inmigracin con un bondsman, cules son lasobligaciones? Pagar el premium inicial.Pagar el premiun de renovacià ³n anual si lo hay.Asegurarse de que el inmigrante acude a todas las citas con la corte y, si finalmente es acordada una deportacià ³n, que realmente se presenta para proceder a la misma.Responder con los bienes seà ±alados como colateral por la totalidad de la fianza de inmigracià ³n si el inmigrante al quedar en libertad no cumple con sus obligaciones de presentarse en corte   y cumplir con las à ³rdenes de un juez de inmigracià ³n, particularmente la de deportacià ³n, si es que llega a dictarse. En qu casos no se va a permitir una fianza? Cuando exista una orden de deportacià ³n previaCuando el detenido haya cumplido una condena por un delito de al menos un aà ±o en prisià ³nCuando se crea que hay un riesgo de no presentarse a las audiencias en corte o a una cita con un oficial de inmigracià ³n.Cuando se considere que es un riesgo  para la comunidad o para la seguridad de los Estados Unidos. Es posible que una persona que acaba de cruzar ilegalmente la frontera y es detenida pueda ser puesta en libertad despus de pagar fianza? Va a depender del caso. En la mayorà ­a ser muy difà ­cil. Pero desde luego que no es imposible. Si ya hay una orden de remocià ³n dictada contra el detenido, se complica la cosa, ya que sà ³lo ser posible si se lograr reabrir el caso, para lo cual hay que contar con un abogado.Si todavà ­a no hay orden de remocià ³n y se cree que puede haber una chance para tener un caso de inmigracià ³n, como por ejemplo tener un caso razonable de asilo, lo mejor es contactar con un abogado de inmigracià ³n de la zona en la que està © el centro de detencià ³n (Esta es la base de datos de abogados, se puede buscar por especializacià ³n y ubicacià ³n).  Si no se tiene dinero se puede checar con la pgina web del Bar Association del Estado y ver si ofrecen servicios pro bono para estos casos o con organizaciones sin fines de lucro como Catholic Charities. Why do you need to be thinking about med school now? The reason is that getting accepted into med school is notoriously competitive, and med schools will be looking for candidates with an obvious commitment to medicine. Think about it: if you needed to have an operation or a broken bone set or an illness diagnosed, you’d want someone who really cared about medicine, learned all they could about the subject, and were dedicated to their work, right? Not someone who became a doctor because they couldn’t think of a better job. Similarly, med schools also want to accept people who are passionate about medicine. So, while it’s not required to start planning for med school while in high school, starting pre-med off on the right foot and being able to show med schools that your interest in and commitment to medicine was obvious even back in high school will go a long way in showing them that this is a career you’re genuinely interested in and excited about. You want to be well prepared for pre-med by the time you start college and have already begun to gain the knowledge and skills necessary for being a great doctor. In the following sections, I’ll go over exactly how to do this! Skills and Knowledge You Need to Prepare for Pre-Med Again, being a great pre-med student means that, when the time comes to apply, you’ll be impressive to med schools and able to show them that you’re an ideal candidate. So, in high school, you’ll want to be thinking about how to be both a strong med school candidate as well as a strong pre-med candidate. What exactly do med schools look for in applicants? The best way to figure this out is to look directly at what med schools are saying. Here’s a sample of what three med schools are looking for in candidates. Their responses are similar to the majority of med schools across the country. NYU School of Medicine states that they take into account "excellence in coursework at the college level; capabilities as judged by college instructors and premedical committees; the results of the Medical College Admissions Test; and the results of an interview at the School." Additionally, they recommend courses in English, Biology, Chemistry (organic and inorganic), Physics, Biochemistry, and Genetics. The University of Michigan Medical School "holistically evaluates candidates for admission across a range of attributes necessary for successful development into a compassionate, skilled physician serving the needs of a diverse and changing population. These attributes include: Academic excellence Altruism Written and verbal communication Desire to learn Integrity and ethics Leadership Reliability and dependability Resilience and adaptability Social/interpersonal skills and teamwork" Stanford University School of Medicine states that, "Desirable candidates for admissions are academically ready to succeed in our curriculum, have life experiences that will enrich our learning environment, and have personal qualities that will serve them, their colleagues and their patients well in their professional lives." Now, obviously, some of those things, like MCAT scores and extensive college coursework you can’t really complete as a high school student. However, there’s still a lot you can start working on. As a high school student preparing for pre-med and eventually med school, you will want to focus primarily on three things: Preparing yourself for college classes Gaining experience relevant to med school Demonstrating personal qualities desirable in med school students and doctors Working on each of these three areas in high school will make it easier for you to succeed in college and impress med school admissions committees when it comes time to apply. Read on to learn how to accomplish each of these things! Using Your Classes to Prepare for Pre-Med Med schools won’t look at your high school grades when they review your application (although some allow AP credits earned in high school to cover certain entrance requirements), but colleges definitely will, so you shouldn’t slack off in high school. Doing well in your high school classes is important because, not only will it help you get accepted to your top colleges and their pre-med programs, it will also help give you the discipline and knowledge necessary to do well in college, when your grades really do matter for med school. If you have a pattern of getting high grades in high school, that will make it much easier to get high grades in college! Let’s look more specifically at the areas you should be focusing on. Science Classes In pre-med and med school, you’ll definitely be taking a lot of science classes, so it’s important to have a strong foundation in this subject by the time you enter college. Doing so will likely allow you to take more advanced science classes in college and get higher grades since you’re starting with solid background knowledge. If your school offers them, taking AP Biology and/or AP Chemistry are two of the best classes you can take to help you be prepared, since you’ll be taking multiple biology and chemistry classes in college. AP Physics is also useful since pretty much all med schools have a physics requirement as well. The MCAT also has numerous questions in each of these three subjects, so getting a firm foundation on them early on will help you when it comes time to study for that exam in college. Keep your notes from these classes, as well as any finals or comprehensive exams you took in them. They may come in handy later on if you need to quickly review basic information on a subject. Also, pay particular attention during labs. It can be tempting to zone out and let your lab partners take over every now and then, but lab work is something you’ll be doing throughout college and med school (and sometimes beyond), so it’s critical that you understand how to set up, run, and analyze an experiment. Additionally, the MCAT has a question type, called Research Design, that specifically tests your knowledge of research projects. If you have room in your schedule for science electives, see if your school offers any classes in biochemistry, human physiology, or a related class. Math Classes In addition to science, math is the other subject you should be focusing on in high school if you want to be pre-med. Like science, take advanced math classes, and the higher the level (i.e. AP Calculus BC over AB), the better. You’ll be taking multiple math classes as a pre-med, and, as your science classes become more advanced, they’ll begin to incorporate more higher-level math as well. Pre-med students often have rigorous course schedules, so you don’t want to fall behind or get overwhelmed because your math skills aren’t where they should be. The best classes to take to be prepared are pre-calculus and calculus, but if those aren’t offered, or you have extra room in your schedule, a statistics class will also be useful to take since statistics is used in many areas of medicine. In your math classes, pay particular attention to how to analyze graphs and data tables, since these topics will be specifically tested on the MCAT in its Graphical Analysis and Data questions, and you will often be asked to interpret visual data like these in your future classes. Taking challenging math classes can help prepare you for college pre-med classes and beyond. Other Subjects Even though math and science are the two most important subjects to focus on to prepare yourself for pre-med, you shouldn’t let your other classes suffer. Aim for solid, if not spectacular, grades across the board in your other subjects. In particular, you should also work to do well in your English classes. Strong writing and communication skills are important for both college and med school, and many med schools have an English requirement for their applicants. So, doing well in your high school English classes can only benefit you down the road. You may also want to consider social science classes in psychology and/or sociology. The MCAT has multiple questions on both of these subjects, and they can help you understand different areas of medicine better, even if you don’t specialize in psychology. This is because understanding why people behave the way they do and make the choices they do will help all doctors who work with patients and need to be understanding and supportive. Being an Exceptional Student For all of your courses, particularly your math and science classes, make sure you talk to your teacher if there is a concept you are struggling with. High school classes are usually much smaller than college classes, and you can use that additional one-on-one time to ask for help and clarification. This can be much more difficult to do in college because courses generally move at a faster pace, teachers are working with more students, and you’re often expected to come in with sufficient background knowledge. In order to do your best in your college classes, you want to minimize all the content gaps you have. So, if you don’t understand a particular chemistry lab or are baffled by your calculus homework, speak up! It’ll help you be more successful when you’re a pre-med student. Additionally, in your classes you should work to be a model student, not just through your grades but through the way you act as well. Make an effort to always complete work on time, encourage cooperation and teamwork when working in a group, and offer help when a teacher or classmate needs it. Most colleges require you to submit letters of recommendation from your teachers, and if a teacher can point to an instance where you helped a classmate who was struggling with homework or got your group to work together when people were disagreeing, that will make your application stand out much more than if they could only talk about your grades. Acting in a responsible, mature, and helpful way in high school will make it an easy pattern to follow by the time you start pre-med. Having strong letters of recommendation will help you get into your top pre-med schools of choice and will help you know what to expect when you need letters of rec for med school. Using Your Extracurriculars to Prepare for Med School Your extracurriculars are also an important way to prepare for pre-med in college. Getting involved in extracurriculars that relate to medicine, or even just working directly with people, can help you decide if pre-med is really the best choice for you, and it’ll show schools that you’re serious about studying medicine. Additionally, if you do well in your extracurricular and impress your coaches or supervisors, they can help write you letters of recommendation when college admissions roll around. The best extracurricular to get involved in if you want to prepare for pre-med is volunteering at a hospital. This is because, even though you won’t be personally performing any medical work, it’ll give you the best idea of what being a doctor is like because you’ll be in a hospital, be working with patients, and be able to learn more about medicine by observing doctors and other medical professionals. As a college student, having hospital volunteering experience will give your med school applications a boost, and it will look even better if you began this work in high school. To get started, talk to your advisor or contact nearby hospitals to see if there are open volunteer positions. Other volunteer options include volunteering at a retirement home, homeless shelter, even a school. Basically any place where you interact regularly with people will help prepare you for working with patients. There are also clubs you can join that will help prepare you for pre-med, including science-related clubs like Science Olympiad or Science Fair that you can participate in. Over the summer, you may consider participating in a medical program specifically for high school students. These programs often take place at colleges or universities, and they give participants a chance to conduct research, observe doctors working, and/or learn how to conduct simple medical procedures. While they often have hefty price tags, they can be a great way to help decide if becoming a doctor is what you really want to do. Just like you are doing in your classes, strive to be a great member of whatever extracurriculars you choose to participate in. Take leadership opportunities whenever you can, whether that means gaining a leadership position in the club/activity, taking charge of a new event, or suggesting new ideas for the future. Additionally, be a team player whom people can trust to be on time, get their work done, and work well with others. Your coaches and supervisors are a great resource for letters of recommendation and, as with your classes, it’s never too early to show that you have the type of character a doctor needs and people who can attest to that. What If You Don't End Up Applying to Med School? So, what happens if things change and you decide that med school isn't for you? That's fine and actually very common. Most people who, at some point in their life, decide they want to be a doctor, end up changing their mind. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as discovering a different career that interests you more, learning you can't handle the sight of blood, or deciding that you don't want to be in school that long. Attending med school and working as a doctor requires a lot of long, hard hours, and, if you find yourself disliking the above activities or losing interest in the idea of med school, you absolutely should not become a doctor just out of fear of having wasted your time preparing for med school. Being a doctor when you love the profession is hard enough, and if you choose to become a doctor despite disliking the job, trust me, you'll be miserable. The good news is that, even if you follow all the above advice to the letter, you won't be behind your peers or at a disadvantage if you choose a completely different path than your original plan of med school. As I mention below, following the advice in this guide will help prepare you for any future major and career, perhaps with a slight math/science slant. That's because the steps you need to follow to prepare for med school - get good grades in a variety of subjects, obtain leadership experience, cultivate relationships with teachers and classmates - will serve you well in the future no matter what you end up majoring and what career you end up pursuing. Looking Ahead Now you know how preparing for pre-med in high school can help you be confident and successful when you begin college and eventually apply to med school. Taking higher-level classes, particularly in math and science, will help you be more prepared for your pre-med classes, the grades of which will be carefully scrutinized by med school admissions officers. Participating in extracurriculars related to the medical field will help you get skills you’ll use down the line and show med schools that you’re committed to being a doctor. All of that advice is useful no matter which med school you want to attend or what type of doctor you want to become. But, should you be doing more work in high school? Should you already be figuring out which med schools are your top choices and what you want your specialty to be so that you can tailor your classes and extracurriculars even more? The short answer is no. Trying to figure these things out so far ahead of time will only put added stress on you, and they won’t help you get accepted. Most pre-med students apply to over a dozen med schools, and, once you get into med school, many people don’t choose a specialty until their third year, after they've completed rotations and gotten a better sense of what different specialties are like. This means that no one is expecting you to have these things figured out as a high school student. Additionally, even if you are certain right now that you want to attend, say, John Hopkins for med school and become a pediatrician, there is a high chance that will end up changing your mind at some point in time, so trying to prepare exactly for that path can end up hindering you down the line. Instead of trying to have everything planned out, just follow the above steps which will help prepare you regardless of which med school and specialty you end up choosing.
